I just got my Pentax K20D body today thinking that all my manual 35mm lenses would work with it. They mount onto the camera just fine, but when I turn the camera on, I get a blinking "F--". I can't "lock" in the lens at the smallest aperture, and I tried going to "input focal length" in the menu, but I can't access it, and I can't take pictures at all. How do you make it work?
I'm using a Tamron 28-200mm f/3.8-22 zoom lens and a 50mm prime f/1.4-16 lens, if that helps. They're both manual focus.
Go to http://www.shutterbug.com and type pentax k100d in the Search box. Look for the Review of that camera by Joe Farace in the Oct. 2006 issue. On page 2 you'll learn how to use your older manual focus Pentax mount lenses. It should be the same or similar for your K20D.
Of course, it may be covered in the Owner's Manual so looking there won't hurt.
Innovative pinhole lens from Loreo on my Pentax K20D body.
I am planning to purchase the Pentax k20D body only, which means I'll be in need of a lens. My focus will be portrait photography so I'm looking into what would be the best lens for that. So far I've read that the Pentax SMCP-FA 50mm f/1.4 Lens is great for portrait photography because it gives great blur and minimizes distortion pretty well. I also looked into the Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II Lens for Pentax and Samsung Digital SLR Cameras for its low price. I like the variety in the zoom of this lengths, but its aperture is obviously not in comparison to the SMCP-FA.
I'm looking for a lens that is great for head shots, can also take great pictures at body length, and great pictures when trying to incorporate background with model.. Any suggestions?
The consesus among photographers is that the best portrait lenses are between 85-105mm on a 35mm camera (full frame dslr)
The 50mm on a 35mm camera is the one which is closest to the human eye in terms of field of view.
Anything under 50mm is liable to "distort" portraits especially when you are close to the subject.
An 85mm would give you good head shots and you would be able to get full length shots in easy enough by moving a little.
Get the fastest lens you can (lowest f number) so that you are able to throw the background out of focus.

I have a Nikon DSLR and am looking to upgrade in or out of the Nikon line. I've been looking at the K20D for a while now from Pentax. Can anyone offer any personal information on this body, such as layout and image quality?
Thanks in advance!
I've owned a K20D for about a year now, after trading in my Nikon. The weather sealing and in camera shake reduction are by far the best features.
My Nikon was definitely better at low light and high ISO, so expect to pick up a good flash. I use the AF360FGZ, a great flash.
Auto focus probably the worst part about the K20D. It's really slow to lock except in extremely well lit conditions.

Great for: outdoor use, multiple camera use, sporting events, inclement weather conditions, hiking, hunting, birding, etc.
Improved camera grip to avoid accidental drops

Hello
In fact I have some different SLR Praktica and ZENITH lenses (Pentax M42 screw Mount) and looking for a new DSLR. I was interesting in Nikon D90,D5000 and Canon 500D Rebel T1I with a 18-200mm .But i was told that most of Pentax DSLR accept M42 adaptor without problems of focusing to infinity cause old SLR Pentax had made M42 mount lenses. But im wondering if there is a problem with auto-manual lenses that contain movable small pin for wide open focussing and weather if it can affect on light metering ability?.Also im wodering if all Pentax DSLR K bodies accept M42 adaptors and which one is better than others?

Also do you think that these lenses deserve such bodies or 18-200mm that is made for most new DSLR is much better. Thanks with my regards.
I bought a Pentax K200d just to be able to use all my screwmounts, a box-full of them. Here's a guide I stumbled upon then.

Here's another site.

To stress, get the adaptor that gets flushed (level) to the camera mount. If a flange stays outside or above the camera mount, focusing to infinity will not work.
To add, some K-mount lenses have the Ricoh pin that can get the lens stuck. Search on that more on the net and how to solve the problem.
Metering works whatever kind of lens. You will be using the lens as if it were on the film SLR body. Also, with the newer bodies, you will get focus assist.
If you can afford to get the body with the kit lens, do so. The Pentax 18-55mm is an exceptionally great kit lens. It's a steal at such a low price.
You are wrong. It is the other way around. The dSLR deserves better glass so use the older lenses.
I have several questions concerning the Pentax K20D camera when in comparison with others. Is the K20D's auto focus quicker than the K200D? If not that big of a difference, Would it be smarter to save about 250-300 USD to get the K200D instead of the K20D? Also leave aside the video capabilities of the Nikon D5000 and the Canon Rebel T1i. Which one would you prefer, the K20D, D5000, or T1i and why?
Sorry for all these questions. I am a noob and wants a DSLR. I am serious about photography as a hobby. So the amount of knowledge I will have to learn does not matter (Damn right! Throw it at me). Therefore buying a cheap noob-friendly DSLR would be a waste of money because upgrade means losing money.
I've been doing quite a bit of research and it seems like the K20D and K200D has slower AF than it's competitors but at the same time compensates this by having a better body than it's competitors. I want to take pictures of cars and tennis. The Continuous shooting doesn't really bother me much. How long do you think it will be before the K-7 drops in price after its release and by how much?
I would be happy to jump to a professional level DSLR and struggle to use it if I had the money, because in the end I'll eventually know how to use it. So there's no point in buying a lower model DSLR when I am willing to spend the cash to buy the better DSLR. So I would rather try to buy the most capable DSLR with its basic lenses kit available for my budget of just under 900 USD. So suggestions?

My advice is the Pentax K20 read the Owners opinions and then make up your mind.
If you use the new DA* Pentax lenses you get a much faster HSM auto focus than using the internal motor, focus speed really does depend on the lens you fit not all lenses need auto focus at all, lenses such as macro with their small depth of field are usually best manually focused, then the brighter pentaprism (as opposed to the dimmer pentamirror) viewfinder comes into its own. On the new K7 it's the only camera offering a 100% view.
Having Image Stabilisation built into the camera is a big plus, it works with any lens fitted even a 40 year old K mount lens available for peanuts on eBay.
