Many people have a stockpile of stored, unprinted images in hopes of printing them some day. Unfortunately, future generations will never see them.
I enjoy looking at my family photos, dating back from the early 1900's
My advice: Get them printed on REAL photo paper now and regularly, otherwise you'll have a lump sum of hundreds of dollars in printing fees. Not only that, you will have the daunting task of sorting different images with the the exact same files names to even do it.
Early digital cameras were so low quality, the printed images were embarrassingly poor. A generation of crappy pictures to pass on.
The digital camera also loses the candid quality of picture taking. You can easily delete images that a traditional camera couldn't. Worst, you can erase an entire camera by accident.
By the way. I have been doing professional photography for over 25 years. I have a darkroom and I also do digital photo too (and I love it). I am concerned on the fact that so many people are going to lose family photos, that their next generation will never see.
Hey mr spin!
Thanks for the advice!
i have digital scrapbooks... I also do Digital art......
I only print out the good ones! and i have them all backed up on a dvd disk! There for i can store a few disks somewhere and i can keep my moments on paper as well but i have a back up! a disk is smaller then any photo book! a disk is even smaller then a shoe box of photo'!
after losing all my stuff in a fire! i'm for one am blessed to have moderen technology!
I don't think the digital has removed the photo album but it does point out the lazy peeps...
Early digital cameras had the same quility as a throw away camrea so i really don't know what your talking about plus isn't the moment not really the photo!!!
most Newer digital camreas have way to many steps to accidently erase your entire camerea! but is possilbe regardless!
the only thing i want to advise you on is keep a disk burnt of your 1900's photo's scan them and save them! if by chance they all don't fit in a fire safe then you will miss out on that viewing pleasure!
Again Tahnks for your advice
Keep snapping those camreas!
Pics of my family
There were lots of pictures of both my sisters (I have no brothers), my dad when he was a kid, my mom when she was a kid and then all of her grandkids (including mine). She does have pictures of me as a kid, but for whatever reason - she didn't put any of me in that album. Do you think this is weird?
Yeah that's not cool and my feelings would be hurt a bit. But did you ask her why dear? You need to do that if it bothers you.

My cousins and I know this aunt had all the irreplacable family momentos and probably placed them somewhere for safe keeping before anyone realized that she was losing her memory. They made several moves and changed banks many times before she passed on. The album has been missing for a long time and presumed lost on one of the moves, in a moving box, or safety deposit box. What information would you need to track this down, even if we had a list of probable banks to call....isn't there some way that you can find out for free if the "government" owes you money...i.e. if you left an open bank account somewhere, or a deceased relative did?? You see those services advertised all the time. Are they legit? Would that be the way to go? Would the safety deposit box only be tracable if she also left a bank account open at the bank? What do banks do with old things left behind when someone isn't paying for the safety deposit box anymore but they cannot get in touch with the client??
Banks send statements to people with checking and savings accounts and 1040 forms to people that have CD's or saving interest, so if she had an account with a bank who ever was watching over her affairs would know. In most states unclaimed property is turn over to the state after a period of inactivity usually between 5 and 10 years. You could check with the state agency in the states she lived in.
I have a thousand photos are better. I have photos of all my foster children and they remind me of all the joy they added to our living with them I have a hundred pictures of our camping days and vacationing at KOA in their cabins. I remember losing my route in some big town in kentucky and the young man giving me directions and he looked at me and said"Just follow me and when I wave you on keep going" that was the wildest ride of my life--I ran more run lights than I will ever know.
Pictures from New Mexico remind me of our search for cousin Pat Garrett and finding his grave site and his family their with him. Some lady at the cemetery told my grandson she wanted pictures of us because we were famous. I laughed over that a few days.
My home has a large display of photos on the walls--I want to see them ---not hide all away in books. My grandson said they are always changing.
On our 25th anniversary we went to the west coast and took lots of pictures and one photo reminds me of the day I went looking for snakes---the sign said be on the look-out for snakes and I couldn't find a one.
We probably have pictures from all states. We enjoy taking car trips--I still love to drive and he photos reflect where we have went on our journey through life.
Thanks for asking-----
wat format should i scan them in and what format i should save them in to import into the indesign document. some hav said TIFF but that will be WAYYY to large since i hav around 300 images. is there a difference in print quality if i save them as hi res jpegs
JPEGS MAY be good enough if you save them in a VERY high resolution. The problem with jpegs is that they DO lose some resolution detail every time you resave them. For example, you scan them and save. Some detail lost. You open up the file and make some photographic fixes, and then save the changes. Some detail lost. You reopen the files to make a collage or some other Photoshop trick and save it. More loss. You get the idea?
Now, if you scan and save an image in jpeg only once, the loss is limited only to that one time. But, if you import the jpegs into an InDesign document, you will be working for a long time on that album and adding a lot of images, moving them around, making saves and changing your layouts, etc. (and you HAVE to make saves often because, if something goes wrong, you don't want to lose a lot of work done between saves.
So, for such a project, with 300 images, jpegs are not the best solution. It may be "good enough," but there is no doubt that saving them in a non compressed format will make for a better result. So, my question to you is, how large a file is "WAYYY too large?" As long as you have the large enough hard drive space, what does it matter? Once the project is done, save it all to CD or DVD and delete it from your hard drive.
Do what the pros to and go with the TIFF.
