What is the best free photo album or organizer software?

Over the years, I have close to 10,000 digital photos saved on hard disks. Need something like iPhoto on Windows. Picasa, EasyShare or else?

Picasa ( http://picasa.google.com/index.html ) is exactly what you want. It is a free Windows app, provided by Google.

"Picasa is software that helps you instantly find, edit and share all the pictures on your PC. Every time you open Picasa, it automatically locates all your pictures (even ones you forgot you had) and sorts them into visual albums organised by date with folder names you will recognize. You can drag and drop to arrange your albums and make labels to create new groups. Picasa makes sure your pictures are always organised.

Picasa also makes advanced editing simple by putting one-click fixes and powerful effects at your fingertips. And Picasa makes it a snap to share your pictures – you can email, print photos home, make gift CDs, instantly share via Hello™, and even post pictures on your own blog."

fyi, Google says "it may consider releasing Picasa for Mac" in the future.

How Do Photo Organizers Work?

I have a ton of photos on my computer.

I'm interested in using an organizer such as the one in Photoshop Elements or (the new) Sharpcast.

But, I've never used an organizer before.

I have a few questions.

1. If I use the same photo in a few different albums, will a copy of the photo be kept for each album? Or, the the organizer somehow keep track of the fact that I'm using that one photo in more than one album?

2. What are the drawbacks over using an organizer given that someday the software will be outdated? Will I be left with a huge amount of work in trying to (once again) recreate albums? I would hate to put a ton of work into using, for instance, Photoshop Element's organizer and then have photoshop slowly become a thing of the past

3. I like to edit photos (often using Elements). After I edit a photo, are the results updated in each album that uses the picture?

4. Is there anything else that you think I should really be aware of before I decide to use an organizer?

You need a Mac with iPhoto.

When I save digital photos to my hard drive, how should I organize them--with photo software or folders?

I save digital images from the web. What's the smartest method for keeping them organized--manually saving them in labeled folders in My Documents, or saving all the photos in just one folder unlabeled and use software like Paint Shop Album or Photoshop Album to tag and organize them? What should I do when I want to delete some photos...should I always delete from within the photo organizer software?

Folders are best.
Then use Picasa2 from Google to see what you have.
Also, please remember not to use digital images you get online unless they are in public domain or you have specific permission from the creator.
