Whats the best camera for SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY?

very interrested in sports photography, and im looking for your opinion of the best cameras for sports photography. any help is appreciated.... yes, i know its going to be expensive

I would say the Canon 1D Mark III which is the next generation after the 1D Mark II that I have. This series makes up the majority of sports and photojournalist cameras now. I would recommend fast lenses. I have :
17-35 f/2.8 L (the 16-35 is the newer version)
24-70 f/2.8 L
70-200 f/2.8 L IS (the best general purpose sports lens)
500 f/4.0 L IS (a huge lens that is often used by pros)

Which is the best digital SLR camera for sports photography?

Sony, Nikon, Pentax? Make and model please!!!!!

Also any top lense ideas?

I am looking to spend up to around £700 on the body.

I am interested in learning about photography and taking some action shots. Sailing, watersports, but also wildlife, people, etc.

Ideas and suggestions much appreciated.

Also, any top London schools for learning about using the camera?

I would recommend a canon 400D or 30D. Canon have the widest range of lenses that will help you to do all of that.

for the lens, if u like all in one lens, i would recommend the Canon EF28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS. I know its expensive and bulky, but it covers a lot of ground and the image quality is just simply stunning. i own one

Or if u want a few lenses get a Canon EF24-70mm f/2.8 and a Canon EF70-200 f/2.8 IS lens. This will definitely allow you to take better pictures than the all in one solution, but you also have to be bothered with changing lens everytime and it also end up costing more.

I need a good camera for sports photography and for photos of people who walk around, which is best?

I have used a point-and-shoot all this year, and everything is blurry. I like to take photos of sports and of the political candidates when they come to town, but they always walk around the stage. I wanted to know if 3 fps is good enough for sports and for people walking. because I don't want to spend more than around 700 bucks. thanks
I am looking more for a D-SLR, not another point-and-shoot.

For $700 or less, you can get a nice entry level DSLR like a Nikon D40. Currently, the D40 is available with an 18-55mm and a 55-200mm lens for under $600.

It's great for all types of shots, including sports and portraits.
Look here for different types of photos that people have submitted. Just type in the subjects that interest you.

What is the best camera setting for sports photography in lowlighting?

I am shooting with a Canon Rebel XT 350D. It is easy to stop action during the day, in the natural daylight. But what about when the sun goes down. I am finding it hard to stop action. The camera is not focusing as fast and my pictures are coming out blurry. So after a certain time I just quit shooting. What am I doing wrong. I have been using the auto/sport setting. And no I don't have an external flash.

Try your ISO setting at 800 or 1600 if you don't get to much noise at 1600. If you’re using the stock lens (17-85mm f/4-5.6) you are probably shooting at f5.6 depending on what sport you shooting; I am sure you’re zooming in. You may need to buy a lens with f2 or f2.8 (these may get expensive). As for your focus try different modes; the one shot AF mode may work faster than the predictive one. Ditch the flash also; I know you said you don’t have an external. I would not use an flash as depending on where the subject is your flash is probably not even getting there which will result in an under exposed shot. Also, if you are using the flash your out of focus may be due to the limits of the flash sync; the shutter can not exceed 1/200th so you will blur if you have a fast moving subject.

All in all, ditch the flash, use the widest aperture you have, and let the camera set the shutter speed (just watch out if there are big lights that you are getting in the shot; it will mess with the auto exposure and under expose you); or, get a meter and set the shutter speed yourself.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

What is the best camera to buy for sports photography?

First of all I am a PHD user of cameras (Push Here Dummy) (I don't want to deal with changing of lenses, focusing, backlighting, etc.) I have 2 kids in sports (soccer, gymnastics, basketball & football). They are often far away in the middle or on the other side of the field and of course in action! I want to be able to take quality CLOSE UP pictures with PHD function - good, fast, self-focusing zoom function an absolute must, and multiple fast repeating shots. So what are the best ones out there - I am not made of money so I would like to stay well under $1,000 while maintaining quality of picture and product performance. Anyone who has the experience to advise on what the aspects are to consider with regard to zoom capabilities/multi-frame shots and/or pinpoint a couple of selections would be greatly appreciated. (We have 7.0 mega pixel purse size camera, but its zoom while O.K. for nearby photos is O.K. just won't cut it for the sports!)

Unfortunately, the only cameras that can truly catch any action shots are exactly what you said you do not want. A DSLR camera with interchangeable lenses is really the only cameras that don't have perceptible shutter lag. I know of no point and shoot camera that does not have shutter lag from a half second or worse.

DSLR cameras are really modified film cameras so all the digital image related maters are dealt with after the sensor is exposed. Point and shoot cameras do a whole list of things after you press the shutter release and before the exposure is actually made.

    Hi Andrea,

Your Nikon D90 digital camera is fine for Sports Photography. There are better cameras available and also better lenses, but they are only going to give you better quality pictures with the correct technique.

It sounds like you need to learn some of the techniques involved with taking digital sports photography. The steps are quite easy to learn, but take a while to master.

I have a section related to Sports photography on this website. Basically you need to change a few settings on the camera, such as shutter speed and maybe try burst mode. Try having a look at this page for some tips.

If you still can't get it to work, then add a comment to this page with the details of the shot you are trying to achieve and I will talk you through it step-by-step.

For any other photography related techniques, my business partner Amy Renfrey has a great ebook called Digital Photography Success , where she teaches you how to take great portraits, landscapes,...
