I want to buy a camera that captures close up pictures really well, is my assumption correct that the cameras mentioned above get better images than the panasonic small pocket size digital cameras.
I suggest Panasonic FZ28.It is high-end point and shoot camera that take great quality pictures with large zoom.

My wife and I are looking for a nice digital camera. She would like it for taking routine pictures(vacation, birthdays, etc...). I love outdoor photography, I also would like it for taking family pictures. I have a Nikon N70 and have been very happy with it but would like to go digital. Any help would be appreciated.
You didn't state a budget.
If you have some Nikon glass, take a look at the Nikon D50, D70s, or the new one, D80. Or the D200 but that is a step up in the pocketbook.
Any of these will serve you in whatever capacity you desire.
Don't forget to budget for memory cards, maybe a flash unit, and an image working software program of some kind. (Adobe Photoshop CS , Paintshop Pro, and Photoshop Elements are some of the most popular.)
You will find your wide angle lens is not as wide on a smaller sensor dslr, so you also might want either the kit lens or an ultra wide angle of some sort.

What sort of lighting, cameras etc would be best for a beginner? I've just got a compact digital camera at the moment which I've had good results with but I now want to move up a step and make some money.

A digital SLR camera would be a good start. E.g Canon,Nikon Sony, Olympus. On the hotshoe of camera you need an adaptor to a light stand with umbrella. A simple 283 Vivitar flash can be attached to light stand. Any 6-9 ft background you like will do. A portrait lens for you Slr also.
I am interested in photography, particularly portrait photography. I like editing and retouching in Photoshop, so I would prefer a digital camera. Is there a quality camera that is good for portrait photos that is less than $500? I would like something that I can be a little bit creative with and also learn with. Thank you!

me and my friends were messing about with a digital camera and we had it on black and white i took a picture of my friends kissing and it was beautiful as in the picture took our breath away we all were looking at it for ages also paper with layering helps with effects xx

The specifics:
Parents were tired of the stale (staged) indoor studio photos of Dannika. They really wanted some “natural” outdoor photos to give family and friends as Christmas gifts. So we headed to the park with one-and-half year old Danni, several changes of cloths, and plenty of her toys.
Child photography can be challenging for these two reasons
1. Posing is out of the question with a one-and-half year old. (Especially when you’re outdoors.) 2. They stay still about as long as your typical house fly.
Solution
Have a strategy! (Game plan.)
If you head off into the wild outdoors with child, extra cloths, toys and camera gear in tow without thinking this through there is a very big possibility your results will not be what you wanted.

All successful child portraits have these 3 elements.
