Best Digital Camera For Sports Photography

Answers

Which is the best digital SLR camera for sports photography?

Sony, Nikon, Pentax? Make and model please!!!!!

Also any top lense ideas?

I am looking to spend up to around £700 on the body.

I am interested in learning about photography and taking some action shots. Sailing, watersports, but also wildlife, people, etc.

Ideas and suggestions much appreciated.

Also, any top London schools for learning about using the camera?

I would recommend a canon 400D or 30D. Canon have the widest range of lenses that will help you to do all of that.

for the lens, if u like all in one lens, i would recommend the Canon EF28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS. I know its expensive and bulky, but it covers a lot of ground and the image quality is just simply stunning. i own one

Or if u want a few lenses get a Canon EF24-70mm f/2.8 and a Canon EF70-200 f/2.8 IS lens. This will definitely allow you to take better pictures than the all in one solution, but you also have to be bothered with changing lens everytime and it also end up costing more.

I use the Canon EOS 10D. It has all the fun little features that the other cameras listed have, though it is only 6 Megapixels. What makes it particularly good for sports photography, though, is the fact that it is one of the few digital cameras that can be set for a 3200 ISO. This means that it can capture things twice as fast as cameras that can only go up to 1600.

At a professional baseball game, I stopped 90+ mph pitches to where you could see the stitching on the ball. That is fast, and with sports photography, fast is what you need.

You can still buy these wonderful little cameras at used websites like http://www.keh.com . I bought mine with two lenses and paid about $1100 including shipping.

What's a good autofocus digital camera for sports photography?

My husband wants to take pictures at our sons' baseball and soccer games - he wants to be able to point and shoot. We have a Canon PowerShot Elph and we can get pretty decent pics but the shutter lag is a pain. And since it's 4 years old I'm guessing there is some better technology now....What's a step up for us in the digital world but not into SLRs?

I have a Digital Canon Rebel with a 300mm lens and it works awesome! It's not the huge lens, can't afford that, but it still gets right in there on the action, and you can even edit it on your computer so you can crop and zoom. I've taken pictures of my son playing baseball and it will stop the ball and any other action and is very clear!

What is a good digital camera for sports photography (football & soccer) in low light conditions?

I am an amateur, been using a Kodak Easy Share DX7590 and believe it or not can often salvage images in Photoshop but I am ready to move up to a camera body and changeable lenses. Any suggestions?

I somewhat disagree with the previous posters so I'll throw in my two cents.

Since you are an amateur, you probably don't need to drop a lot of coin on your camera. Obviously, the more you spend the better you'll get, but you can get good results for under $1000.

I would suggest you take a look at the Canon XTi or XSi. These cameras are Canon's entry-level SLRs and can be found for $500-$700. You may also want to consider looking for a Canon 20D or 30D on Ebay. They're the next step up from the XTi/XSi and since they're a few generations old can be found for $400-$600.

Another option is to look at Nikon's line of SLRs. I don't know too much about them so I can't give you great advice. However I do know people are happy with the D40 and the D60.

Once you have a camera you're going to need a lens. The above poster mentioned the 50mm f/1.4. It's a good lens, but for sports photography it simply won't get you close enough to the action. You're going to need a lens that's measured in the hundreds. It would be nice if you could get the 200mm f/2.8 but I'm guess you probably don't have that cash. Canon has a few options for cheaper telephoto lenses. There's the 75-300mm, the 100-300mm and the 70-300mm. The 75 is crap so don't bother. I just bought the 100 and am quite happy with it. The 70 is more expensive but it has image stabilization - a nice feature for sports photography. The one drawback with all of these lenses is that they have smaller apertures, so they aren't amazing in low-light. Unless you have the money to spend on the 200 f/2.8 you're going to have to settle for these. In order to prevent camera shake due to low light you're definitely going to want to invest in a good tripod.

How do I choose a good Digital SLR camera for sports photography?

My main area of intrest is taking action shots and sports photos. Can anyone help or give me some suggestions to what I should be looking at? I'm planning to buy, but I don't have an unlimited amount of funds, if you know what I mean. As a matter of fact, I'm kind of strapped. Any suggestions on the best deal with greatest performance?

I really believe buying a camera is an individual choice.
The person needs to read alot of reviews on cameras and learn as much as they can from the internet.
Go to the store and hold them and try them to see what they feel like and how they take pictures.
I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera.
Good Luck
