I'm going to take a Cool Shot digital camera as well but I want fantastic photographs to commemorate my experience. I want to take color and black & white photos of the city. I want to capture the architecture, the markets, the cobblestones, the people, the gardens, through my very own eyes. I need a camera that will deliver without being over-complicated. I have a budget of $400-$500 which should include the camera and lens (other accessories are not as important). I also need recommendations for film (i.e. during the morning, day, night, for museums, restaurants, shops, markets, we're attending the opera, cabaret,etc. and would like photos of our formal wear.... lol, for those sites where a big camera isn't feasible, the Cool Shot will serve me well). Thanks so much for your help! :)
In my opinion, I really recommend you getting a Nikon D40 kit with a Nikon 18-135 lens (should fit your budget). The camera is smaller than your average DSLR, quick and easy to use. The main advantage that I see with digital cameras is you can change ISO on the fly. With film camera, you will have to change out your film to adjust for different light levels. This will help you since some of the museums do not allow flash photography. The pocket digital cameras are convenient, but you will not be happy with the end result compared to a DSLR.

Garden Rant: What's a Garden Photographer To Do?
This story that ran in the San Francisco Chronicle a couple months ago got me thinking about the fate of garden photographers in the digital age. Used to be that a photographer could spend a lifetime shooting plants and gardens, keep them filed and organized and cataloged according to color, (correct) plant name, location, and any number of other categories, and hope that an editor would call and want to see some slides. Off the slides would go, and maybe later a check would arrive. Over time, that catalog of images would only get more valuable. It's a retirement plan, right?
Well, it didn't work out that way. Nowadays, as that Chron story points out, editors are all too happy to jump on Flickr and find a workable image for a fraction of the price. Amateurs are happy to pocket a few bucks, and do the readers know the difference? I wold argue that they do--we all know the difference between gorgeous, perfect plant porn and that awful low-res garden photograph shot in garish sunlight with no plant names in the caption--but that's not what I'm thinking about today.
