I was wondering what kind of camera would be good for bird photography, but not cost more than $500. I have experience with cameras, and am looking for one with at least 8 Megapixles and 15 optical zoom.
Thanks!
For birding, you need as much telephoto as you can get. You probably want the Olympus SP-570 UZ. It has 20x zoom (26-520mm 35mm equivalent), has 10 megapixels, and is right around $500.

I LOVE BIRD PHOTOGRAPHY. WANT TO BUY 12 X PLUS DIGI CAMERA FOR THE SAME. PL ARRANGE TO SUGGEST ME WHICH ONE WILL BE BEST.MY BUDGET IS UP TO $ 600. I HAVE SHORT LISTED SONY DSC H5 AND PANA DMC FZ7.WHICH IS BETTER OR IS ANY BETTER ANOTHER ONE.
THANKX IN ADVANCE.
Both cameras get excellent reviews and they have an incredible 432mm zoom with image stabilization. It seems that the Sony, for $120 extra, has just one advantage: 7 megapixels vs. 6. But even six megapixels is plenty for an 8x10 inch print.
I'd get the Panasonic.
Price: $24.95
I am wanting to get my mom a nice camera for her bird watching hobby. I am not too sure what to get, and I don't have a lot of money.
So if anyone has suggestions on what is a good affordable camera for bird watching, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Go to KEH.com and buy a used Panasonic Lumix FZ30. While it won't be quite as good as a $1000 DSLR with a $2000 white lens, it actually won't be so bad and you might be surprised. You can find one of these for around $300 used in excellent condition and it has a 10x zoom (about a 400mm lens) and lots of bells and whistles including a scene mode for this sort of thing. Also 8mp, so you can crop some.
For those naysayers who might claim this can't be used for bird phtography - here are a few shots I took with a similar, but much older camera that only had 2mp (an Olympus UZ-2100 with a 10x zoom):

Large aperture perfect for low light conditions and stargazing

The S3IS will give be better for bird photography than the G7 because the S3IS has more optical zoom than the G7. The G7 is mainly for people who have $$ and want to have a retro looking camera. I telling you right now though the S3IS does not give you enough range to get close to wild birds. Tame birds will be fine but wild birds will be extremely hard to take a picture of. Thats why pros usee 500mm lenses cause birds will fly away if they didnt get anything longer.
i'm going to get a new camera!!!
for christmas, that is....this is a really tough decision for me, can u help me chose the right one?? :(
here are my 5 requirements for the camera:
i want to make sure it:
1) for appearance, it should look something like this:
http://www.ndreview.com/wp-content/uploa ds/2006/11/nikon-d40-1.jpg
so it is a professional photography camera, not just for family pictures...in fact i want to use it for:
2) to do pika pika, aka light graffiti (so basically it needs shutter speed settings u can adjust):
pika pika is like this if u don't know---http://farm1.static.flickr.com/74/199899 505_830e894e2b.jpg?v=0
3) taking other pictures as well that come out in quality like this (vivid but soft, professional and crystal clear looking)---http://digital-photography-school.com/bl og/wp-content/uploads/2007/02/images/bir d-photography.jpg
4) NOT a plain digital camera like this: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/135/39886 2932_99e6f9c429.jpg?v=0
so i've been thinking about getting a nikon or canon, probably.....which one should i chose??? or maybe a different brand?
5)it has to be something i can order online, and then i need the name of the website and the model name of the camera.
any other reccomendations are good even if it's a different brand, as long as it's a 'digital still' camera and i will be able to do pika pika (have shutter speed adjustments) and also take really clear pictures like that bird!!! (this is for my only christmas present, lol, so i know it will be expensive...that's a given, so i'm not going to consider price right now)
please help me out!!! :)
and thanks in advace!!!! ^____^ v
You already have an answer there. Why don't you just get that camera. http://www.ndreview.com/wp-content/uploa ds/2006/11/nikon-d40-1.jpg It's called Nikon D40

Thanks Mark, I'm sure bird photography is not easy for you with that camera. I have a Olympus C5050Z which is a great camera with superb fast lens but I had to progress to a DSLR and interchangeable lens' to get the reach required, even from the nature reserve feeding station hide. Now with the Nikon and a 300mm lens I'm finding great limitations on the reserves. Most birds are extremely wary of us human animals. I'll keep filling in the lottery tickets
