I just bought Nikon D60 SLR with VR 18-55mm Lense 1:3.5-5.6G. & Tripod. I cant buy lighting system due to my budget. So I want to use early morning sunlight (Outdoor) for my Jewelry Photography.. Please advise me the camera settings & distance between jewlry & camera for sharp & clear photos.Thanks.
Use a light tent for lighting, they are very easy to make for less than $10. Look at

To get an idea of how to do this. You can also build a frame and use white bed sheets and then put the light on the outside of teh box for even lighting.
Use a tripod and the highest Aperture (larger number) for good depth of field. The following sight also provides good details for jewelry photography:

I run a small watch company and sell watches online. I have used a couple cameras in the past couple years. And am trying to find a camera that has less noise. It seems like every camera i use has a lot of noise.
I just bought my girlfriend a HP R937 and as you can see from this photo at 8mp is is vary grainy, Shot at 100iso and on a tripod.

The Cannon That I used for years gave me better results and it was only a 3mp

Any one have any good suggestions on what camera to get with out breaking the bank.
Canon Eos 400D, Is out of my budget looks to be about $800. The Cannon Powershot A300 i think now is probably about $50 and that takes better pictures then both my R937 by hp and my fujifilm.
Yes I had a macro lens for my Fujifilm S5000 however the S5000 over compressed the jpg images so that there was a bunch of noise in the image. Im looking in the $200 range. It can be an older camera. Agian i just need crisp photos, Dont need 10mp, Just a real clean 3mp =)
While a DSLR with a macro lens would be optimum, I have got good results with an old Sony Mavica. Take a good look at your set up. You may get more bang for your buck with a light tent or light box.
You can get more diffused light on an object without wash out. It will also help avoid getting your own reflection in the photo. This will give you a more professional appearance to your photos.

I am looking for courses in jewelry Photography
any Info???
i know photoshop and my work now required to take some pic of jewelry
i have the camera but it is not coming out the way i want it
am looking for hand on courses
thanx for the help......
I am not sure which school in NY would offer just one course never mint so specific. I would call the community colleges and see what they offer. Your best bed would be to get a book or video on the subject if you don't have time to work as an assistant with a photographer who specializes on jewelry. It takes a lot of attention to details. The lighting has to be right on and then the color of the metal needs to right as well as any stones used in the shot. The jewelry shooters I know use tends around their objects. You can find them at B&H Photo in NY. The best advise to give to your boss is to hire a professional Photographer.

I have a regular consumer-grade compact digital camera and a good tripod. The camera has a macro feature on it. I can't afford to upgrade to anything beyond that (yet). But I need to take some good macro shots of some jewelry for some eBay auctions. What are some suggestions on how to make the best of my limited equipment and get some good macro shots (so I can make enough money to actually buy some better equipment)?
Your camera should have a macro setting (little icon of a flower), try a couple of shots that way for smaller pieces against a neutral backdrop ( black, gray, tan). Push the shutter half way down, let the lens adjust and focus and try to do all this without the flash. Don't use a model wearing the pieces, distracting. just get the best pix possible of the jewelry.
Hi! I would like to take photos of the jewelry I make and post them on my website. I have taken photos before using a the MACRO function and have experimented with light--both natural and flash. Problem is, the slightest scratch on silver or spec of dust is magnified 100x and one sees the inconsequential imperfections better than the piece as a whole.
What simple techniques can I use with a digital camera to get a flattering photo of my work? Thanks so much for your help. Please keep your answers clear and succinct...like in Photography for Dummies, and you will earn that 10 points! :-)
You will need lots and lots and lots of light. Put on some sun glasses and when it bright enough to see everthing then turn it down one notch. Well not really but you will get better results when you light the item from all sides. Without seeing your results I cant comment specifically, but it sounds like you have shadows coming off of those scratches and such. If you can fill that shadow it wont show nearly so much. Many people us a light tent http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/44 2631-REG/Smith_Victor_402056_3_Light_Flu orescent_Kit.html this one is just a refference. You can find them much cheaper or make one yourself but you will get the idea. Lots of light and the cloth diffuses all of it so it essentually is lit from all angles. A couple of white sheets and a few 150 watt bulbs is all you really need. But if you really want to get a kit they are actually pretty cheap on ebay and such.
Using your flash in addition to three 150 watt bulbs wouldnt hurt either.
hope this helps

Tips For Great Jewelry Photography: Technology Toolkit
If you are an online jewelry seller, it is imperative that you have good quality photographs of your pieces. As the saying goes, “a picture is worth a thousand words” and for jewelry this is very true. Just think for a moment of the process you follow when buying your wholesale jewelry. You look at it, you touch it, you hold it in your hand, and you may even try it on before you decide whether or not to buy that piece to add to your inventory. Now think of your online customer. The only thing they can do is look at a photo. That photo and your description is all they have to base a buying decision upon. You as the seller, have to make that photo count! Here are a few tips on taking great jewelry photos.
One simple and quick way to create effective photos if you’re not very comfortable with cameras is to use a scanner. While photos created this way are only two dimensional, they can be very dramatic. Earrings, necklaces and any piece that can be laid flat on the glass can be shot in this manner. It won’t work well for items such as rings where the piece is best photographed in an upright position to allow for a three dimensional shot.
