My friends have a digital camera, but no computer. I think giving them the photo printer (like the EasyShare by Kodak) would be a great gift, but the ones I've seen so far need a computer. This may be a dumb question, and I am aware of that, lol.. but I'm hoping that it exists?
Thanks!
yes... look for a camera and printer with "PictBridge" capability.
http://www.digicamhelp.com/processing-ph otos/printing/pictbridge.php
"PictBridge is a standardized technology that allows printing images from a memory card in a digital camera directly to a printer, regardless of brand.*
The technology completely bypasses the need for a computer. Each PictBridge device is automatically recognized by the other.
The camera compares its PictBridge functions to the functions of the printer. The camera then displays the supported functions on menus on the LCD screen or in the viewfinder."
Many regular printers (for word processing, etc.) have PictBridge.. you don't need a special printer.
You hook up the PictBridge capable camera and Pictbridge capable printer via USB and print directly from the camera.
This will work whether you are using the camera's memory card or built-in internal memory.
It would be the easiest to get a printer that has a card slot. You pop it out of the camera and then pop the card into the printer's card slot - no USB connection needed.
For example, this printer:

As it says in the link, look for the "PictBridge" logo when shopping for both or ask the salesperson at the store/online retailer.
The logo on the outside of the camera and printer boxes will look like this:

If they have that, you're good to go and don't need a computer to print pictures.

I want to buy one of those photo printers that you just hook your digital camera up to it (or the memory card?) and print whichever photos you want but I have no idea which ones are good. I have a Sony Cybershot camera, I don't know if that's important. If you have a digital camera photo printer that is working well for you, I'd really appreciate any sharing of recommendations. :) Thanks
Would not want to buy a camera photo printer because of the cost of prints and the printer, but I do get great prints on my HP PSC (Printer, Scanner, Copier).
Ritz/Wolf/Kit camera stores do 4 x 6 digital prints for 5¢ each on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Also, have had great results from Snapfish.

Really like their photo sharing service and have received great quality prints and good prices which impressed everyone.
CAUTION To prevent memory card corruption, keep batteries charged and don't delete photos. Wait for lights to stop flashing then turn camera off before removing memory. For card readers, double click Safely Remove Hardware. Then click Stop and OK.

HP's Home Photo Studio…with everything included!
Digital camera/photo printer combo has everything to get you started. HP makes it easy for you to take the plunge into digital photography by bundling a digital camera with a compatible photo printer — at a great value! This package includes everything you need to get started: a 5.0-megapixel camera, a fast printer, ink, and starter 8 1/2" x 11" photo paper. You'll be able to take pictures and print them right away.
Print beautiful photos in as fast as 27 seconds. Take great pictures and print them — even borderless! — from 4" x 6" all the way to extra-long 8 1/2" x 24" paper size. The 7850 printer offers quick print speeds up to 20 ppm (pages per minute) in black-and-white or full color; printer also includes a removable 4" x 6" photo tray for creating frameable prints anytime. Plus, the 6-ink photo technology enables all gradations of grays and colors.
Focus up close from far away with 4x digital zoom. You can zoom in or out to frame your subject exactly the way you want it to look, whether it's a bird on a nearby hill or a favorite football player on the field during the game.
Includes starter photo paper in 8 1/2" x 11" size. Experiment with your first photos by printing them in a large, frameable size on the included photo paper. You'll quickly notice how the dense 5.0-megapixel resolution lets you print enlarged images beautifully, without noticeable "grainy" effects.
1.5" on-camera LCD screen for preview/review. The built-in LCD lets you frame every shot before you click; after you've taken a series of pictures, review them all on the same screen — slide-show style.
Shoot mini movies in full-motion video with audio. Be ready to capture baby's first steps, the graduate's moment on the stage, and more…in sound and motion! This camera captures film clips with up to 24 fps (frames per second).
HP Image Zone software lets you sort and edit your photos on-camera. Crop and resize your photos, then file them by date or keyword so you can easily retrieve them later. You can even create your own greeting cards and photo albums! Plus, Image Zone can restore a picture you accidentally deleted or inadvertently edited.
Print directly via the included PictBridge™ cable or via SD/MMC cards. Both the E317 camera and the 7850 printer are PictBridge-enabled, so all you have to do is connect them with the included cable…and print! Store pictures in the built-in 16MB memory, or use Secure Digital™ or MultiMediaCard™ media (sold separately) to transfer picture files from your camera to your printer.
Backed by HP's 1-year warranty*.
I guess it depends on what you plan to do with the camera and what kind of pictures you want to take. HP makes pretty decent printers and if you can get a sample shot printed from it prior to purchase depending on your satisfaction with the quality of the print that should be your main decision maker on that scale. Also be aware that if you're going to be say, printing a book a photo printer isn't the best choice because the quality is definitely inferior on that level.
As for HP cameras I've never had any personal luck with them. As the previous poster stated HP camera's are 'ok' but for true quality I'd look at another brand. I'm a very big fan of Canons, but Nikons are also solid pieces of machinery, along with the sonys, in terms of reliable picture quality and satisfaction.

My parents refuse to get a computer -they turn people into addicts, you know?- but I know they'd love a digital camera. Is there a way to use a digital camera with a photo printer without owning a computer?
Like others have said, at stores you can have prints made straight from the memory card. You can also hook most cameras up to a lot of personal printers. BUT:
* You need a computer to retouch your pictures, and
* You need a computer to store your pictures.
With film, you used to keep the negatives in a shoebox so that you could always have extra prints made. With digital, you save the 'negatives' on your computer. I mean, what are you going to do when the cameras memory card is full?? Delete everything? Have a friend put the pictures on a CD all the time? So it's possible, but you need to think about these things.
I have the following photo printer & digital camera
SAMSUNG DIGITAL PHOTO PRINTER SPP-2020
NIKON DIGITAL CAMERA COOLPIX 7600
Everytime I connect the printer cable from the printer into my camera ready to print off pictures the camera instantly cuts out and remains blank screened and on stand by mode until I then take the cable out again. I don't have a clue why I cannot print my pictures it is the first time I have attempted to do so. I am not familiar with cameras. If anybody is able to help me please can you give me step by step on how i successfully print giving details to guide me. I am not printing using my pc in any way. The printer is specifically to print photos direct from the camera. Serious answers only please. Thanks
Well I hope you have the manual..The printer works by recieving data from the memory card in side your camera ..Some printers require the memory card to be taken out and directly put into the printer port then by accessing the power and print button on your printer it will print directly from the memory card of the camera..If that doesnt work try booting up the software to your computer it might have to go from the camera thru the dock port to the computer then from the software included to the printer by the print function on your pc....Hey I tryed to help...just boot up the software and connect the camera to the dock and the printer to the pc... see what happens try the memory card thing first..just remove it from the camera and see if it fits into the printer some where..it should say memory card slot if there the same brand..

Canon PIXMA MP640 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One printer test ...
-Resolution up to 9600 x 2400 dpi
Trusted Reviews gives the Canon PIXMA MP640 a pretty good review with an overall score of 8 out of 10 points. The printer scores highest on features and value while scoring lower on print speed. The printer has a lot of features and makes good prints, but it is a bit expensive to run so it does not get a reward from the reviewer.
