I'm looking for a good quality, point and shoot compact digital camera that excells at taking photographs at night or under low-light conditions. I know all about using high ISO and fast shutter speed but many digital cameras cannot process low-light images quickly or have autofocus problems in low-light. I've tried several Kodak and Sony models so far but they're very bad. Can anyone help???
I've had similar problems with Kodak digital cameras - autofocus for a few models I've tried is slow and indecisive in low light or night photography. Most compact point and shoot cameras are notoriously slow to process photos.
A few tips on buying a camera for taking photos at night:
1. You want a camera with ISO capability of 800 or higher.
2. Adjustable autofocus and preset to 3 meters or more.
3. Adjustable white balance.
Most compact digital cameras come have resolutions of 6MP or more. When shooting at night... or anytime where quick processing is needed... reduce the the resolution down to 4 or 5MP.
A few digital camera brands seem to be better than others but Canon seems to make very good compact digital cameras.
Finally... While compact digital cameras are very convenient, they simply cannot beat the performance of a digital SLR. If you're serious about taking photos, I'd just bite the bullet... sacrifice the convenience and affordability and get an SLR.

any tips to share in taking night photography with automatic digital cameras? photos taken are usually blur or overexposure
The shutter will be open for a long time, so anything that moves will be blurry. Also, if you are holding the camera you will move it so everything is blurry. Put the camera on a tripod or at least set it on something sturdy such as a fence or the top of your car while you take the photo.
Cameras are really dumb and don't realize when it is dark. The light meter thinks you want the scene to be a typical scene with white and black balanced instead of being mostly dark as you would expect. Set it for 1 f/stop underexposure if your camera has that feature. Otherwise, adjust the exposure in an image editing program such as Photoshop afterwards.

Brush on opposite side of cleaning tip for removing surface dust.
Designed for cleaning lenses, binoculars, scopes, night vision goggles and other sport optical devices.
Patented Carbon formula effectively cleans amino acids from fingertips and other sources from optics and screens without damaging the surface.
With those requirements you are greatly limiting yourself. I suggest that you go to http://www.dpreview.com to look at the cameras that are currently available. [For night photography, I'd look to Digital SLRs. You'll be pretty limited with a point-and-click, even a good one.]
As for night photography, you should be looking for the widest aperture that you can find. The aperture is the little f/5.6 number used when discussing lens capabilities. The LOWER the number the wider the lens opens. You need the wide aperture (hole) so that you can get a lot of light into the camera in a short period of time -- otherwise you risk movement blur.

Film vs. Digital Night Photography: Interview with Troy Paiva of ...
Recently I had the opportunity to view some amazing long exposure film images by my friend and fellow night photography workshop instructor Troy Paiva . The film images are 45 minute exposures at f/11 using Kodak E100VS film in a 35mm camera. I noted that Troy made both film and digital exposures from a similar vantage point for a few of these images, and asked if I could show some comparisons — he graciously agreed. Below are 3 sets of images with my thoughts on the look and relative strengths of each format, followed by commentary from Troy. I look forward to hearing your comments on how the film and digital versions compare!

Joe: The long lines of the car are really accentuated by the huge star trails in the film version. The slightly lower and closer camera position, and light falloff on the back of the car really create dimensionality. I love the texture on the side of the car, the brightly lit rear wheel, and headliner details in the film version. Looks like the front part of the car had some fill light?
