How come digital photos from the same lens/camera take up different amounts of memory?
Wahiba Sands

I have a Canon Rebel XT camera. Some photos (Jpegs) only take up about 1.2MB while others take up 6MP. Why is there variation when the same camera/lens is taken for each photo? Also, Canon XT is an 8mp Camera. Shouldn't each photo be 8mp? Thanks!!!

PS: Photoshop tends to increase the memory of a photo. Why is that?

First off, megapixels aren't the size of a photo. It's what makes up the photo. You are thinking of megabytes, which would be the size of a photo and how much room it takes up on your memory card.

Yes, more megapixels usually means more detail and a larger size, but that's not always true. And depending upond your settings (Fine, Normal, etc) can change the size and quality of your photo. Also, EXIF data is enclosed with each photo you take, and not every photo has the same details. Every picture is going to be a different size. Just depends on the quality, etc.

What sort of camera and/or camera lens is best for a night photo?
everyone is so near

(Especially to capture the moon and stars)
I plan on getting a Canon EOS SLR soon, but I don't know if I need any sort of special zoom or lens to capture the night sky. My $250 Canon (that is sadly now broken) did not zoom in enough to pick up the moon in any photos.
Thanks for your help!

i wouldn't say it's so much a question of a camera, but more of just having a tripod.

i've taken some ok night shots with my samsung point-and-shoot even before i got my canon rebel xt dslr. but if you want a camera that's really for low light shooting, try the nikon d300 or - if it's within your budget - the nikon d3. they have pretty high maximum iso levels (6400 and 25600 respectively) and perform well as far as noise suppression goes.

if you're looking for a more affordable camera body though, go for canon's 40d. it has very well-controlled noise and excellent image quality all the way up to its maximum of iso 3200 (though it's just a fraction of nikon's max iso's).

lenses - get f/2.8 lenses for maximum light sensitivity. but, again, that's going to set you back by a lot.

see, this is where tripods come in. no matter what your camera or lens is, night photos generally still come out best when shot at low iso's and extended shutter speeds. so buy what your budget can get you, and just buy a reliable tripod along with it, and you'll be on your way.

to illustrate, here's a night photo that i took recently.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/56335445@N0 0/2296459374/

my gear when i shot this: canon rebel xt (which is pretty much obsolete), canon 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 usm (good, but neither top-of-the-line nor f/2.8-fast), and a generic, tripod that cost me $18.

hope this helps. good luck!

Please help me find a high quality digital camera for professional wide lens photos?
Egyptian Folklore

I work for a hotel and need to take some really good quality pictures for our brochure and website. I borrowed a camera before from someone with a wide camera lens which was perfect for the job but need my own so I can take pictures when required on short notice.

I can't afford to spend a huge amount on the camera (upto £300). Can anyone recommend the best quality wide lens camera for this money?? Would be perfect if I could also buy a tripod for it in the future.

for that price your SOL.

If your going digital you would need to use a digital SLR. A point and shoot camera with a wide angle lens will have lots of lens distortion. Now granted you can remove that distortion with photoshop CS3, but then that software cost about 1000 dollars maybe 500 pounds so I doubt you would want to start down that road.

In the DSLR route you have a slight problem. since most DSLRs don't use full frame 35mm sensors, a 18mm isn't like and 18 its actually like a 27mm... and it has some lens distortion. If you wanted a full frame sensor you would have to get a high end Canon and that would blow way past your budget.

I think with a limited budget and a desire to go for wide angle your best bet is to get a film based SLR used and a good wide angle lens. You can get either of those items used for a very good price and then when you get the film developed just have the negatives scanned.
