I want to go buy a camera with greater optical zoom than the one I have but I'm curious why do video cameras have such higher zoom capability? I was testing one out that could make things 44x times bigger while the highest I've seen for cameras is around only 6x?
No, the biggest for digital cameras right now is 24X http://www.dpreview.com/news/0902/090203 03nikonp90.asp
The more zoom a lens has, the more it has to compromise at the extreme ends of the zoom range. Because the zoom range is so gigantic, nothing is really optomized for the best performance at any focal length.
The videos you see taken by camcorders are actually pictures taken in really quick succession, around 24 frames per second. Our brains interpret this when we watch a video and automatically fills in the missing gaps, making a continuos, undisturbed video.
With videos, attention is usually directed on motion, and not so much on aesthetics. Because a video is so fast-moving, our eyes usually dont search for those really tiny details as we otherwise would with a still photo. And because we don't search for those tiny details, a resolution of 1900x1080 ( 2.1 megapixels ) is often more than enough. With cameras however, we see resolution upwards of 10 megapixels.
To sum it up, the flaws of a big zoom lens on a video camera is not immediately apparent when you look at it. On a still camera though, a zoom lens with 44x zoom will always mean huge distortion, huge chromatic abberation, vignetting, and maybe a lens so dim that you won't be able to even use it under sunny conditions. And if you look more closely at camcorders, you'll also find that the high-definition models "only" have 10 or 12x zoom, to make the best use of its high resolution and quality of the sensor.

Photoace is right, the first photo was more of a curiousity than anything else. You have to fast forward some years to the first practical photographic technique, the dagguerreotype. The impact of the first dagguereotype cameras/photos did more than just provide a cheaper means by which someone could get their portrait done although it certainly did that. Although some artists feared that the camera would replace painting, some painters embraced the medium as a source by which they could use as studies and perhaps sparked the first ember in the shift from classical to modern art. How is this? Well lets look at the work of Gustave Courbet, in particular his work Burial at Ornans. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/cultureshock/fla shpoints/visualarts/courbet_a.html
This painting with its in the moment realism sparked a shift from classical to modern art, in that artists for the first time were divorcing themselves from the ideals of the academies and instead imparting in their paintings, sensibilities and framing which is common in photography. It has been said that Courbet did reference photographs as models for his paintings.
Perhaps the biggest social impact that photography introduced to the public was the emerging field of photo journalism. Matthew Brady used photography for the first time to document the trageties of war. As you may know photos still have a huge impact in regards to the outcome of a war. Wars can start as well as end on a simple photograph.
Another footnote to the social ramifications of the invention of photography was that it has been said the west was won with bibles and photographs in a sense that when people headed west they brought little with them but they always managed to bring photos and bibles as personal comforts for the long unknown journey.

When you press the button, The shutter opens allowing light through the lense for a brief amount of time. The light exposes a piece of photographic film coated with a light sensitive emulsion. The greater the intensity of the light the more reaction is caused and an image is formed on the film. Of course there is a lot more to the actual operation of the camera but that is the basic principle.

Generally, the most versatile camera will be a DSLR. Since you specifically mentioned portraiture and street photography, I'd still lean toward some sort of DSLR. You haven't mentioned sports and therefore, speed is not a critical issue. So just about any entry-level DSLR will do. Which specific brand/model is really up to you and can be answered only by trying the cameras out for yourself.
Canon and Nikon will be the brands recommended by most professionals and serious amatuers. Neither is inherently better than the other but, compared to Panasonic, Pentax, Olympus. Sony and the like, Canon and Nikon offer the broadest selection of accessories and lenses. If you've ever attended a pro-sports event, fashion show, or seen a news photographer in the last 30 years, chances are he was using a Canon or Nikon camera. They are the professional standard.
A good "utility" lens for street photography with a DSLR is an 18-200mm zoom. Canon and Nikon both offer such lenses for their DSLRs. Sigma and Tamron also offer similar lenses for Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sony and Sigma brand DSLRs cameras. You give up a little image quality with these "super-zoom" lenses but, they are hard to beat for convenience when shooting street scenes.
For portraiture, I prefer short, fast telephotos like an 85mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 prime (fixed focal length) lens. That's a standard from 35mm film days but, most affordable DSLRs today have a smaller sensor and with these cameras, a 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 provides a similar field of view and tends to be a bit cheaper. Another option for portraits is a quality 70-200mm or 70-300mm zoom. You may get other recommendations but, these are the things that have worked for me.

Ricoh GXR interchangeable unit camera, previewed - Digital ...
After several weeks of rumors Ricoh has unveiled its first digital system camera, the GRX. The system takes a novel approach by offering interchangeable slide mount 'lens units' - sealed modules containing both optics and sensor, meaning it can switch from a large (APS-C) 12 MP CMOS with a fast prime lens to a tiny 10 MP CCD (with a 24-70mm lens). We've had a pre-production GXR system in the office for a week and have produced an in-depth hands-on preview which you'll find after the link. We've also taken lots of pictures with both lens modules so look out a little later today for an extensive gallery of samples.
