I've got a Nikon Coolpix S610 on order. Under accessories on the Nikon site, there is a leather case listed that shows a snap on lens. But I don't see any description.

Any information about this camera specifically or these lenses in general would be appreciated.
The lenses shown in the link are called add-on lenses and are available for certain cameras, but sadly not yours.
They are used to extend the range of P&S cameras since there is no way to exchange lenses like DSLR's.
You can look for other Nikon Coolpix cameras and see which ones do have the ability to take add-on lenses.
The difference in costs between a P&S with two or three add-on lenses may cost more that just buying the Nikon D40 with 18-55 mm lens ($450) and the D40 has a sensor that has a sensor that is over 15 times larger, thus can provide much better image quality

Have you looked to see what accessories are made for your camera model?
Many P&S cameras do not have remote shutter releases available, nor any other accessories that will enhance your ability to use the camera.

For black and white photography, film is the only way to go. You could go digital, but, the soul of a black and white photo is given to it in the darkroom. If you are stone cold new to the field, buy a good 35mm and look at ilford films and papers. Read up on Ansal Adams, look for his formulas in which he developed his prints. Read up on his techniques. If you are a little beyond a newbie, then consider a larger format camera, something like a mamiya C330. The only problem with the larger format cameras is that you have to order the film from a supplier, I have not seen 120 or 220 film on the open market in decades. As to learning, most camera makers have study courses on line as do the film manufactures. I have included a couple below. The problem with digital black and white is that there is hardly any control over the process, at least not like there is in film. Digital black and white seems so sterile, crisp to defined. Back in the day I started with a Pentax Spotomatic Super F, then moved on to the mamiya's. I looked on e-bay and found both, at really good prices to boot. What ever camera you decide on, whether it be a Nikon F1, or pentax spotomatic F, remember most of the quality comes from the lense. Back in the day, Minolta had a good camera, but bad lenses. Nothing worse than having a great shot trashed by a bad lense. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me through Yahoo Answers! Good luck and happy shooting.

I'm an amateur photographer; I've had my Minolta for almost 4 years now, and I love it. But I want to delve more into photography, and I'm concerned that accessories I'll need (lens filters, remotes, etc.) won't be available--I've spent an hour scrounging the web, and they're already harder to find. I know I'll need to switch over sooner or later, and I guess I'd rather do it before I buy a lot of expensive gear. But I'm a college student, so I don't have a lot of cash to work with. Would you recommend buying a new camera now, or waiting? If you do think I should buy a new camera now, what brands/models can you recommend that will give me quality shots without blowing my budget? Are their good websites I can go to for cameras and photography gear? (BTW, I'd like to stick with film cameras, not digital.) Thanks a lot!!
i'm not really sure what the problem is. filters are typically usable on any lens with the right size threads no matter who makes it, so i don't really see the problem about obtaining accessories.
if you like your minolta i would hang onto it until you've got more cash. then maybe upgrade to a nikon or canon - you can get real nice film bodies for cheap now that everyone is going digital. if you wait a couple of years they'll be even cheaper...
one camera that comes to mind is the nikon n90. it used to be nikon's top of the line consumer camera and cost over 1000 bucks. now you can get one (used of course) for $200-$300

I own a digital canon rebel xt. I'm interested in emotive shots as well as concert photography. christmas is rolling around and everyone's asking me what i want. what accessories would me most useful to me and be at a reasonable price?
Define reasonable cost..??
A new lens would be great, but to many 3 to 6 hundred bucks is NOT reasonable.. However, a new lens is about all your camera COULD take that would allow you to explore some of the areas you have said here.
Good luck and may Santa favor you this Christmas..
