Why doesn't my Vivitar Series 1 zoom lens Auto focus work with my canon Rebel XT?
Vivitar DF-383-Can 40D

I have made sure I have the AF / MF switch in the right position etc. Manual Focus works fine.

First make sure that lens is approved to work with your camera. It might tell in your camera's manual, or you could try asking on Canon's website.

Second, when my old Nikon lenses give me an error message, it's always for the same reason. I didn't have the aperture locked.

Can I use a Vivitar Series 1 100-400 mm lens on a digital camera?
Canon AE-1 - Silver & Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm Macro-Zoom Lens

I bought it years ago when I had a Canon Rebel 35 mm. I found it today and I forgot I had it.

Yes you can use it on any Canon DSLR. The 35mm Rebel uses the same EF mount as today's Canon DSLR cameras.

I have a Canon XT, and have been given three old regular SLR lenses. Is there any set of adaptor rings that would allow me to use the XT with these lenses?

1. Vivitar Series 1 80MM 1:2.5 MACRO No. 37713225
58 MM
2. Formula 5 1:45 85-210mm No. 212972
3. Vivitar Series 1 90mm f 2.5 MACRO ADAPTER
4. CANON LENS FD 28mm 1:2.8

As you know, FD-mount lenses are not compatible with Canon EF mount (electronic signal transfer system). There is no way to use these lenses on your EOS camera.

There was much angst among faithful Canon users because they found themselves unable to upgrade to the new EOS system without buying new lenses. Some of the high profile pros were given “sweet deals” with special discounts and outright gifts of “loaned” camera systems, but the rest just had to suck it up and either buy all new equipment or switch to a more design stable camera company.

For this reason you may be able to pick up a nice Canon AE series body for very little money and use the lenses when using film.

would it work with a canon rebel xs?

The info I found says it will. The first link is to the B&H photo page for your lens. Second link to your Canon Rebel XS camera specs. Third to chart of sensor sizes and definitions showing your Rebel XS is APS-C sensor size.

can you use two teleconverters together??

OK. Will be taking pictures with my older canon ae1. I'm going to a rodeo this weekend. I know from last year, that using my awesome vivitar series 1 70-200mm and a very good high quality vivitar 2X converter that 400 mm isn't going to get me close enough to the action from the stands.

Can I use my 70-200 mm lens, the vivitar 2x converter and ANOTHER high quality 1.5X Canon Brand name converter
together?? The Glass in all lenses is high quality. My 70-200
lens has a max fixed aperture of 3.5 across the zoom.
I know I will likely lose two stops, but If I use a 400 speed film,
I should be able to use high shutter speeds and still be OK..

does anyone think this will be a good idea?? I know for sure I will need at least the 400 speed film, because last year I used 100 speed and then found I could not use shutter speeds of
1/1000 with only ONE teleconverter.

I own both the Canon FD 1.4x teleconverter and the Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm 3.5.

I just checked, and the combination you're wanting to use is not physically possible. The rear element of the Series 1 isn't recessed far enough into the lens barrel for the portruding front element of the 1.4x to mount.

If you really need a lens longer than 400mm, I can suggest a few other options.

The first that comes to mind is the 300mm f4, which is available as either an L or non-L lens. The L version is available for around $250-300, while the non-L version can be had for as little as $100. Either version can use both the 1.4x and 2x teleconverter.

The option I chose was the 400mm 4.5, for which I paid $225 for a very nice copy. The later bayonet mounting version can use both the 1.4x and 2x, and I often even use mine with both stacked if necessary.

The last option I would suggest would be the 200mm 2.8. I also own this lens, and often use it when I don't really want to carry around the rather large 400mm. The internal focusing version(last version) can use both the 1.4x and 2x. I've used it with both before, and, although the optical quality isn't the greatest, if you need the length, you need the length. I paid $150 for the internal focusing version.
