Affordable Wedding Photography

Does anyone have any ideas for affordable wedding photography? (I'm in Washington, DC.) The quotes for most photographers are anywhere from $2400 - $3000 -- and that doesn't include travel expenses! Eek! We're having a very small wedding (50 guests) and the costs above would send us waaaaay over budget.

Ideas? Thanks!!!

Maybe check out local colleges for photography classes and see if there are any star photography students who could take pictures for you.

Buy some disposable cameras and let the guests be the photographers.

Buy a really nice digital camera and hire a friend to take the pictures using your camera. Give him a list of the shoots you want him to take for sure. Then you'll have the camera to take with you on your honeymoon also.

Wait until after your honeymoon and go to a sitting at a nice photography studio wearing your wedding dress and have pictures taken in studio. Would be a pretty pic to hang on your wall, and not the added expense of having a photographer drive to your location.

Note that for only four hours, it may not be worthwhile for many professional photographers or videographers to take the job. But you have a better chance if the wedding is during the off-season or you're okay in hiring someone who is interested in gaining wedding experience. Good luck!

I'm looking for a wedding photographer in the Stockton, CA. area with a budget package below $1000. I don't want an engagement session, I don't want a trash the dress session, I don't want all-day coverage. I want someone to show up with a camera, do a half hour session with me (the bride) and my bridesmaids before the wedding, a half hour session with the groom and his men, a half hour session with me and my groom, then the wedding itself (45 minutes, tops), and an hour right afterwards of everyone. Hand me the memory card (or mail me a CD/DVD later) and leave. Three hours, four tops.

P.S. please no lectures about how important photography is, how I shouldn't stimp on the pricetag- trust me, if I could afford it I've got my fav photographer already picked out- at ten grand. Knowing great photography isn't important doesn't mean I can afford it.

On Craigslist you would want to post an ad under "gigs" for a photographer. Be specific as to the date and time, how much time is expected, etc. They also have an "items wanted" section for the rest of it.

My wedding photographer is offering a pretty penny to create a memory book for me but I feel I've spent so much in photography as it is. Is there someplace where I can get one made for a reasonable price?

I love the story book wedding books and zookbinders, but I know they're expensive. Any amount of help would be appreciated.
KC, the pretty penny I'm referring to is the memory book itself, not the photography. My photographer did a fantastic job and in addition I am purchasing several prints from them. And I would expect them to work their behinds off without feeling pressure because it's their passion. After all, are they not getting paid to do what they love? I don't know how you feel about your profession, but if you feel pressure from your clients and have this sort of attitude, perhaps you should find another job.

I am assuming you have full resolution digital files and the release to use them.

There are several services where you can design your own book. I have experience with blurb.com and bephotobooks.com. The quality is actually pretty good, especially for a product that costs under $100. I'm not sure how they would hold up under very heavy usage, but I have a bephotobook in my lab that literally hundreds of people have looked through, and so far so good. (It is about my grandchildren so I am eager to show it off, of course!) You just go to the website, download the book software, work on your book on your computer. When you're finished, upload the book back to them. In a few days, viola! Book! If you can scrapbook, you probably design it using their pre-made templates. Shutterfly, snapfish, and mpix also have books, I believe.

HOWEVER, there is a difference in quality. Although your self-produced consumer book may look all right, one from Storybooks, Zookbinders, or Asukabooks will be stunning! Also, your photographer has experience in design and the ability to choose images and layout that will tell your wedding story, and the nicer book will showcase your special day at its best.
