It all depends on how awesome the photographer is and where you are. In L.A. that's a good package for about that prices. Make sure you get in writing everything promised and when you get it, sepcific date.

I charge $2000 for me to photograph the wedding and web hosting @ picatage.com linked through my website. All the other stuff is extra they can pay for. Not all photogreaphers charge the same and not all of us are at the same level of expertise or skill.

You do get what youpaid for, I applaud you for willing to pay money. The photographer is the only person you'll hire who works all day for you and gives(sells) you something tangible that will last for generations.

My husband and I own a full time photography studio. However, we took a huge hit with Hurricane Ike and were also without power for 27 days. We feel that we need to close the studio since we will not be able to dig ourselves out financially otherwise. My husband is now employed elsewhere but that leaves me.

A large portion of my work was wedding album design. I do the digital design in Photoshop for the storytelling style albums that are then published in leather hard cover. My problem is, I know what my cost is and what I charged as part of a wedding photography package but I am now targeting the brides who get the printable CD from their photographer but not an album. I will design and print for them with their images.

My question is this: What do I charge for the design. As a photographer I was selling my images and the design time. However as a designer I have no idea. I don't think it can be by the hour since some just fall right into place and others take more thought. What about by the spread (two pages)? I have no idea what the going rate for something like that would be. Any suggestions?

From my experience as a Wedding Photographer, I would say charge by the album.
After all, if a design just falls 'right into place' it's because your skill and experience make it do that. It's not simply the amount of time spent designing the album I would be paying, for but the many years you spent in aquiring those skills and developing those talents that allow you to do just that.
I deal with an album company in the UK and their charge for design seems fair; so, using this as a base, I would suggest charging the cost of materials, plus $200 for the design - more for a particularly lavish or intricate layout.

I am a professional award winning wedding Photographer and I have been trying to find some happy medium with prices and the services that I offer, so that I don't work at a loss all the time.

I want to give a lot, but I also need to have a life as well, Each wedding is around 3 weeks work and I do mostly enjoy my work.

So My question is:
How much would you pay for your wedding photography and what would you expect to have for it?

To give you an idea, wedding photography consists of
Insurance, marketing and advertising, website updates and equipment.

A wedding typically consists of:
2-3 Meetings
several hours of emails and telephone calls
A day preparing my kit
The wedding day (12 hours)
4 Hours downloading and backing up the photos/video
A week of photo editing
Three days building a per view website and albums
Two days album and image editing (as client requires)
4-8 hours making a slide show
2 hours ordering
shipping packing and checking the albums when they arrive.

A typical package would be
a day shooting a wedding, all the digital negatives, a 70 page album with 70 pictures and a DVD slide show set to music.

Preview book of 100-150 images. 10x14" contemporary 10 page album including 20-40 images of your choice in a modern 'magazine style' layout. CD of all images (of reproduction quality). Coverage from the brides home to the cutting of the cake.
i checked out a few cheaper and more expensive photographers but i chose this one as i loved her work and the prices were reasonable, i was quoted less £540 was the cheapest but i do beleive you get what you pay for.

Let me start by saying that i live in nyc and this photographer is based in manhattan. He is a profressional for 30 years and its actually the one that in charge of taking all the schools pictures around the area. Ive seen his work and its extremely beautiful and professional. I say this because i knoe you need to see the work and make sure you are not deling with a phony.
So for $1600 he gives up to 10 hours of work.
A 12x12 40 page digital album
A 20x30 picture including frame with pictures of our wedding. To hang in your living room or wherever you want to put it.
2 11x14 pictures with frame for both set of parents
A total of up to 20 (in my case 12). 8x10 pictures in a leather folder with name imprintes in the front for the bridal party.
25 thank you cards with pictures
And 200 pictures in a 4x6 album.
I booked this photographer yesterday even though i knew i wanted him because i had seen his work in another wedding i have been to. My fiance thinks the price is pretty steep but i believe the price is actually below what it should be for nyc standards. Do you think this is a steal like i do?
kristy- thats exactly how we have to pay him. $800 before the wedding , $400 when we get our proofs and the last $400 when he gives us our frames and the rest of the pictures. In the contract is stated that if anything happends they is a backup that will come and shoot our wedding.
Ive alao check him in the better business bureau and nothing to be found about him

For a photogrpaher in NYC that includes all of that $1600 is a complete STEAL! If you've seen his work, just make sure your contract states that you do NOT pay until you get the goods (1/3 the day of, 1/3 when you get proofs, last 1/3 when you get the rest of the merch) that way you won't get screwed in that department. Also make sure he has a back up in case he is sick or has an issue come up.

I found this photographer near my hometown and I really like his style and fun attitude only his package seems very generous in relation to the price as other photographers in the area are much much more expensive, whats you opinions? I e-mailed him and he is very friendly and helpful

A high price doesn't guarantee quality. Conversely, a lower price doesn't indicate lower quality. 'Digital negative' is a file format is a lossless format that was agreed upon by industry leaders. It preserves as much of the original file's information as is possible. Basically, it's as close to a RAW file as you can come without the hassle of manufacturer-specific compatibility problems arising 10 years down the road. Think long-term: Today, it's easy to open a jpeg with anything, but with computers, 10 years can make the difference between a DVD and an 8-inch floppy disc.

As for references- not examples. If they're established, you may also get some advice from the management of your reception location, local churches, wedding planners, etc....ALL these people form a network- and they DO develop opinions of one another, regarding who's easy to work with, whose work they like, etc.

DO NOT underestimate the human factor when choosing the photographer. This person is going to be hovering around you for the entire day- a day already filled with stress. If you click with the person, it WILL show in your photos....conversely, if you don't really care for them, the smile may be there, but the twinkle in your eye may not be. And you'll have FOREVER to see that in your images.
