I have always had a love affair with the fall. With the exception of this rainy, dreary 2009, fall in Alabama is made up of crystal clear blue skies and mild temperatures. The leaves are beginning to change and the holiday season is on the horizon. In October, I especially look forward to pumpkins on porches and the “Happy Fall, Ya’ll” sign that hangs on every door. Truth be told, I’m not much up on seasonal decorating in my own home, but I love, love, love to carve a jack-o-lantern each year.
This weekend we picked out the most perfectly round, bright orange pumpkin we could find. I watched him like a proud mama as he rode in around the grocery store in the front of our buggy. Allen accidentally broke his stem while picking him up and although I pretended like it wasn’t a big deal, I secretly almost cried right there in the Publix check-out line. The nice lady told me we could pick out another, but I was already emotionally involved. I kindly declined her offer and tried to shrug it off. We took him home and lovingly carved him to make him our very own… and then I super-glued his stem back on. Isn’t he beautiful?
