Indoor or outdoor wedding photography?
Edson_1158

Do you get better results from controlled indoor shots?

Actually you have a higher chance for error with indoor shots...more reflection and shadows no matter how good your photographer is. I've had both.

Photography tips for outdoor wedding please...?
Edson_0168

I am shooting a friends outdoor wedding in May (near Chicago) should be decent weather...was wondering if anyone has any good tips for me-I just got a new Sony DSC H-9 -8.1 Megapixel camera-and i was wondering if anyone has worked with one doing an event like this and has any good tips regarding some of the features the camera has to offer.. Thank you in advance...
Excuse me Antoni-I have several years of photography school under my belt-i was just wondering if anyone had worked with this particular camera and had any tips for me for shooting an outdoor wedding-And FYI-they were not going to hire anyone because they could not afford it-so i am doing it as a favor-i am better than your typical wedding guest so-something is better than nothing.
I love my SLR-i think 35mm is still the best way to go-this couple is not expecting ANYTHING so i will be able to give them what i can-i do have a friend helping me and i just got married in September so i know what i expected and wish to give them the same things i was aware of and wanted. Thank you all for your advice and there will be no virgins sacrificied for this project-LOL.

The Sony H9 is a capable camera with lots of features and excellent Carl Zeiss optics. Of course, as with any digital cam make sure you have a spare battery or two and enough memory cards for special occassions like this.

Since a wedding is all about people, make sure you know where to find the portrait modes (normal & twilight) so yu get the skin tones right. The same advice goes fort white balance settings. Red-eye reduction too, might be a good idea if you don't want to spend much time with photoshop.
Consider the 16:9 ratio setting for formal group shots, maybe you could experiment with that before the shoot. And even though Sony claims the flash has enough power to deliver a good image up to 30 ft or so, don't rely on it too much.
As for pivotal moments (the kiss, signing the wedding papers etc.) you might want to switch to the Advanced Sports Shooting mode since it is optimised for capturing 'fleeting moments'. And with digital cameras, continuous drive mode is no longer a luxury.

The huge zoom range of this particular camera takes quite some time to travel from one end of the range to the other, from 2 secs in hi-speed zoom mode to almost 5 secs in lo-speed mode. If at all possible, any shot that can be anticipated beforehand, should be pre-framed and pre-focused before pressing the shutter release.

Furthermore, I wouldn't hesitate to use the vivid colour mode for general (non-portrait) shots; it's easier to tone them down than to boost their colour and saturation in photoshop. But that's a matter of personal preference.

Hope you'll have a nice day!

What are the best hours for outdoor photography on September 19th in Toronto (Eastern Standard Time)?
Edson_0067

That's my wedding date. I looked up the sunset time, which is apparently 19:25 (7:25pm). But isn't that the time when the sun is completely set and it's dark? How much time before that do we have for good outdoor photos? What would be the 'golden time' to get the best dusk photos?

Thanks!
Does the 'golden hour' refer to the exact hour before official sunset time (i.e. 18:25-19:25pm)?

I would say that up to 2 hours before sunset or so should be fine. You mainly just want to take pictures outdoors later in the day, when the sun is lower in the sky. You don't want to take photos right in the middle of the day because if the sun is directly overhead, the light is too harsh and it will make colors look washed out. But I would say that late in the afternoon should be fine. So maybe starting around 5:30 pm or so.

Yes, it's true that the hour right before sunset has amazing light and it will cast everything in a warm tone with a "golden" color. But it's very tricky to take photos right before sunset...the sun goes down FAST and you don't have much time at all. There's a very narrow window where you'll have enough light. Before you know it, the sun will go below mountains or trees and everything will be too dark. If you do want to take pictures right at sunset, then I would plan the spot ahead of time and be ready. Think about where the sun will be, where everyone will be posing, and how the light will hit your subjects. The point is, when the last part of the "Golden Hour" arrives, you've got to be ready with your camera because the sun will be going down FAST and you won't have much time. Especially since you're so far north.

Im not the main photographer at this particular wedding, but what are the best filters to have when taking an outdoor/indoor wedding. the wedding will start around 6pm. plenty of light available. Ill have a diffusion filter, but will not photograph the entire wedding in that filter of course, but should i get a:

UV haze?
Skylight 1A?
Neutral Density?
other suggestions?
what about for indoor, i.e. reception, dance, etc. ?

This depends a great deal on style, but typically I don't use any filters indoors but occasionally use a B&W KSM Circular Polarizer outdoors to super-saturate the sky etc...

UV Haze and Skylight won't really benefit your pictures much/any in this context, but may protect your lens at the cost of some resolution. Neutral density would mostly only be used in a wedding context if you have REALLY fast glass and have a hard time shooting wide open in bright sun. Graduated neutral density is too much setup for weddings IMHO. Warming maybe, but I usually just warm up the shots in PS and save another piece of glass from hurting my resolution.

Rather than filters, maybe consider spending the money on renting some cool glass from a site like ziplens.com or lensrentals.com

  • Wedding Savings Tip - Use an Outdoor Backdrop | BravoBride

If a fancy reception site isn’t in your budget, then just take advantage of an outdoor backdrop. A new trend in Providence, Rhode Island is to take advantage of The State House and its sweeping staircases and impressive rotunda to capture a formal wedding photo. Many couples are heading to the gorgeous location between the ceremony and reception to squeeze in some photos with an elegant backdrop.

Officially, the state doesn’t allow couples to marry or hold receptions at the capitol, but it has embraced the photo concept. The site has become such a desired locale that the state Facilities Department now books the space more than a year in advance, jamming in up to three couples a weekend in the peak wedding months of summer and fall.

So if you are wanting a memorable, beautiful backdrop for you wedding photos then research locations near your wedding and reception site and find what their policies are on using their location.
