Yashica Electro 35 GSN "Yashica thump" and shutter sound. The loud thump signals that the "pad of death" is in good condition ...
the Yashica Electro 35 GSN was introduced in 1973 based on earlier versions of the same basic camera. It is a top end rangefinder for its day, with 45mm f1.7 lens. It won't work without a battery, because it uses a step-less electronic shutter.
The original battery is no longer available, but there are ways of adapting current batteries to fit. The one that I am using in my 35GSN is from the Yashica Guy (see link below). It works like a charm, but it is simple, so I didn't expect that it woudl give any problems.
I have just purchased on eBay a very nice Yashica Electro 35 GT. I have been after one of these for a while and just got a bargain.
Here is the camera..

I know that the batteries for these cameras (5.6v PX32) are nonger in production, but there are plenty of adapters available so I can use plenty of widely available batteries..
Here's one that I am thinking of purchasing..

(Why it comes with two, I don't know. I only want one!)
My question is, is there an easy way to convert this myself, or make my own adapter?. I don't mind paying for the adapter if it is the best method, but I don't want to find out later that I could have made it myself with a piece of card and a ring pull from a can.
.
You are right about the adapters.. They are expensive elsewhere. I noticed that the seller on eBay only had 'quantity - 2 available', so instead of faffing around I just bought them!. They only cost me £7 including delivery.
Cheers for the links!, I'm looking forward to getting this camera now.

That eBay price isn't bad. I've seen those adapters sell for up to $15 for a single. Two? Because you always need a back-up. I spent a lot of years working over water and I carried two of everything. Spares were indispensable.
Here are some thoughts on making one yourself. This does not apply directly to the Electro 35 but contains many good tips and information: http://www.buhla.de/Foto/batt-adapt-US.p df
For a second opinion you should try the Classic forum at Photo.net. They know their stuff over there: http://photo.net/classic-cameras-forum/< br />
Here is a very nice guide to the Electro series: http://www.yashica-guy.com/document/chro no.html
Im on the market for a RF camera, and i have always had my eyes on the Yashica Electro 35 series. I have my eyes set on a 35 GSN, and im not sure if i should make the deal considering through my research i have discovered many other Rangefinding cameras. Im really stuck on if i should choose the Yashica over the others, any suggestions on a good rangefinder? keeping in mind i want it for photography and artistic shooting (is it ideal? i understand it doesnt have all the manual features, but i have always wanted the electro, from what i can see and hear its a very detailed camera, capturing amazing shots, especially for its age). So What Camera shall i purchase in the Electro 35 / Range Finder category? Thanks in advance! i hope!
A good alternative would be the Minolta Hi-Matic 7S II. You can read a review of it at http://www.rokkorfiles.com
Please note that Minolta also offered the Hi-Matic 7S so make sure you get the 7S II if you decide to go with the Minolta rangefinder.
A camera like a Yashica Electro 35 GSN or a Minolta Hi-Matic E. How does the camera determine what speed to set off the shutter when the flash is hooked up?
On the Yashica, the shutter is fixed at 1/30 in flash mode. These cameras are aperture priority cameras. You set the aperture and they figure out the shutter speed. They can't figure out what to do with a flash. You would have to use a flash meter to get the proper exposure.

My Yashica Electro 35 film advance switch just jammed. Right over the place where the film count display is.(The display is currently at 26...which is two over the usual amount).
Could that (the display number) be the cause of the problem?? Should I just take the film out and all of it will/might be okay???
I didn't drop it at all, I wasn't rough with it. I just in the middle of photographing when it jammed. I love that little camera, and I don't want it to be broken.
Rewind the film and take it out ...it may be that the roll is only a 24 exposure roll. If it is a 36 exposure roll, then the camera will need to be looked at buy a repair person.
