I want to go digital but I dont want lug around a big slr to get the quality of my yashica t4. I saw a similiar question on the internet but it was out dated. thanks for the help

You can't match the resolution of 35mm film until you get to about 14 mega pixels. That being said, if all you want is pictures no bigger than 4x6, nearly any camera with 7MP or better will do.
Many Sony cameras use Zeiss lenses but make sure it says "Zeiss", there are a number of them that use "Sony" lenses.
I bought a DSC-S60 in 2005 which is a measly 4 MP, but with the Zeiss lens and the very short shutter lag, it was a worthy replacement for the wife's T4 for point and shooting.
Unfortunately, fewer and fewer point and shoot cameras have optical viewfinders. They want to reserve the maximum square footage in the back for the LCD screen and you see everyone shooting pictures at arm's length.
Check Steve's Digicam for reviews. He tends to include shutter lag in his reviews as well as showing full resolution sample shots. (huge files).
BTW, I do lug around a big DSLR, but still like to have a small point and shoot that is pocketable and I still have the T4.

"The latest 'T4 Super' (known as the T5 in Europe and Asia) has the same optics and film transport but adds a right-angle "waist-level" finder (good for low-angle and/or sneak shots) plus weatherproof construction. The latter is very important if you like to carry your camera in a pants pocket, where the high humidity from, dare I say it, sweat tends to fog the viewfinder."

I put new batteries and loaded new flim in my yashica t4. It turns on, but the number 0 keeps blinking and won't take pictures. I kept trying to reload the film, and once I close it, it automatically makes the loading sound, but still won't shoot. Please help me.
I seem to recall that there is a spring metal thingy that pushes the film leader onto the wind up spool. Make sure it wasn't bent out of shape. If it doesn't put pressure onto the film leader, the film won't wind up onto the spool.
The T4 is one of the best compact 35mm P/S cameras ever made. That Leica lens will outshoot many SLR's.

As in, are there other point and shoot film cameras that take great photos? thanks!
Also, is there a digital equivalent--a point and shoot digital camera with a following and reputation like the t4?
The Nikon 28Ti and Minolta TC1 are well regarded. They are both very well constructed but neither, IMHO, has as sharp a lens as the T4 has.

I do not know of any digital P&S equivalent at this time. Perhaps the Leica D-Lux 4 in the RAW mode. But it has a zoom lens so it isn't the same at all really.
Perhaps the DP-1. It has a fixed lens but I can't imagine that it is as sharp as the lens in the T4.

Bearing in mind that I do quite a lot of low light level shooting without the flash?
I'm aware of the difference in lense (T3= 35mm/f2.8 and t4=35mm/f/3.5) but which would be better for that kind of shot?
Hmm, a good question, and one that comes down to personal preference. I have had my eye on either a T3 or T4 for a while and I'm sure you will have noticed (as I have) the modest prices they fetch second hand. The T3 has the faster f/2.8 lens, but the f/3.5 lens of the T4 is no slowcoach and I much prefer the body. I have read of both T3 and T4 owners who both say their camera is the better model, and they are both right. A wealth of reviews and sample shots can be found by Googling these cameras, my personal ideal scenario would be one in each pocket, but if I had to pick one of the two I may lean towards the T4.
If you are seriously interested in a great compact with a low light lens then consider the Canon Canonet QL17 GIII, a little larger than the Yashicas but sports a wonderful, sharp f/1.7 lens. If compact is your thing then also consider an Olympus XA.
Good luck with your choice, you can't go wrong either way!.

What if no one's watching? ยป Taking it for a spin: Yashica T4

Also known as “More Toronto Shots” entry.
I recently acquired a mint condition black Yashica T4 from K . Which of course I wasn’t even planning to get until he told me he’s going to get it for me (for now). He knows I wanted to have one, but the crazy price of this beast prevents me from getting a unit.
But anyway. So when I went to Toronto I finally got a chance to hold it in my hands, and I started shooting away.
Craziness ensued.
First off, I would like to say that Yashica T4 is a no-nonsense camera. It actually lives up to its expectations because it knows how to perform. I can’t blame those photography (or gadget) enthusiasts if they are really after this camera for they have their own reasons (not to mention that their reasons are VALID). And to those who own this camera and who don’t want to use it because, well, it’s film? Please think again. Or if you really don’t want to keep it, make some money out of it because this thing is truly a gem.
